The righteously inspired shutdown in toxic water

DAY ONE: GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN...

The self-righteous wing of the former Republican Party has been steeped in its own perfection.  Iowa Rep. Steve King, always good for a laugh, says the battle over the Affordable Care Act will continue (ad nauseam) "because we're right, simply because we're right."  His right-wing colleagues agree,  invoking the word "moral" for their cause. However,  we wish they would be morally honest about it and flat out admit "We're against Obamacare because we hate Barack Obama!."

As the ordeal on Capitol Hill mercilessly trudged on Monday night, we  witnessed more evidence that Speaker John Boehner was little more than a tail chasing his tail.  Is any job worth that much ridicule?

The sights and sounds of the Holiers in front of the TV cameras was an awesome warning that you can lead a fanatical group of pols to less toxic water, but you can't make them sip it.  Several years ago, the physicist Stephen Hawking warned us to be wary of making contact with aliens from another universe.  "They would not come in peace, " he said. Have they now arrived on the hallowed ground of Congress?

With John Boehner running around describing Obamacare as a "trainwreck," there are  contradictory reports that Republicans fear that once Americans engage in the new health reform policy, they will like it.  'Clean" GOP logic is not in great supply these days.

Finally. will there be an evening-long silence in not mentioning the shutdown during tonight's Summit County Republican Finance Committee dinner?    OK, so I'm being nasty.  Let all of the participants eat cake.   (They will anyway.) On the other hand, it might be a positive symbol if each guest checked off a dollar or two on his or her ticket  for Chairman Arshinkoff  to send to the 800,000 workers who were laid off today.

H.L. Mencken apparently knew Rafael Eduardo Cruz: "The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."

Now that you mention him, Mencken also said democracy is "based upon propositions that are palpably not true and what is not true , as everyone knows, is always immensely more fascinating and satisfying to the vast majority of men than what is true".
